ASTEP

ASTEP is a specialized employment assistance program. The first employment program is the first of its kind in Canada to offer Integrated Case Management. The Access to Employment Program at the Phoenix Centre aims to help those in recovery find work.

Employment counsellors help participants develop and use a return-to- work-action-plan that leads to training, educational upgrading, volunteer positions and ultimately employment.

This program has been designed for those who have good supports in place and are ready to get back to work in sustainable employment.

Integrated Case Management focuses on any barriers that affect employability. These might include:

  • Gaps in work history
  • Housing
  • Family issues
  • Child-care
  • Transportation
  • Legal issues
  • Debt
  • Financial problems
  • Addictions
  • Mental health issues
  • Health
  • Lack of self-marketing skills

STEP UP

We also offer Step Up, a unique program that allows each participant to target an occupation and quickly obtain the skills and certifications employers require.

Eligibility:

  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or protected person
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Unemployed, under employed, low skill level, or employed in a low skilled occupation
  • Not a full time student
  • Ready to return to work

Six Weeks of Training:

  • Week One: Personal Awareness in the Workplace
  • Week Two: Employment Maintenance
  • Week Three to Five: Intro to Public Works @ Kwantlen Polytechnic University
    • FREE – 3 week full time course (35 hours/week)
    • Obtain an understanding of BC’s acts, regulations and safety around utilities, trenches, confined spaces
    • Gain an understanding of construction safety relating to ground disturbances
    • Receive Environmental Operator Certificate – Operator in Training Certificate
    • Receive KPU CPS Record of Achievement
  • Week Six: Job Search Skills

Preference will be given to people who have grade 12 or equivalent.

Referrals

Services vary in intensity and duration depending on each participant’s requirements, motivation, readiness and level of functioning. Both workshops and one-on-one employment coaching are offered.

Phoenix offers 2 employment programs; ASTEP and Step Up. People who are unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours/week) and have a barrier to employment are welcome to join our programs.
